Interstellar Comet Lines Up With Earth and Sun, Scientists Politely Request Everyone Remain Normal
SOLAR SYSTEM — An object born around another star passed through a remarkably precise alignment with Earth and the Sun on January 22, offering astronomers a rare opportunity to examine matter from another solar system and conspiracy enthusiasts a rare opportunity to behave exactly as expected.
The visitor, so-called 3I/ATLAS (if that is its real name), is only the third confirmed interstellar object ever observed passing through the solar system, following 1I/‘Oumuamuamaumaumau and 2I/Borisov. NASA identifies it as a comet traveling on a hyperbolic trajectory: it arrived too fast to be gravitationally bound to the Sun, swung through the solar system and is now headed back into interstellar space.
On January 22, astronomers Mauro Barbieri and Abraham Loeb calculated that 3I/ATLAS would come within only 0.69 degrees of the Earth-Sun axis, producing an unusually close near-opposition alignment. The geometry gave astronomers an unusual opportunity to study what is known as the opposition surge—the change in brightness that can occur when an object is illuminated almost directly from behind the observer—and to measure the polarization of light scattered from its dust.

NASA’s TESS spacecraft conducted a special observation campaign of the comet from January 15 through January 22, temporarily interrupting its normal observing schedule to study 3I/ATLAS’s brightness, activity and rotation. The comet was around magnitude 11.5 during part of that campaign—roughly 100 times too faint for the unaided human eye—so residents who stared skyward waiting for the mothership largely succeeded in examining their own retinas.
There was never a threat to Earth. NASA says 3I/ATLAS came no closer than approximately 170 million miles, or 270 million kilometers, from the planet. Its observed characteristics—an icy nucleus, surrounding coma, dust and gas—are consistent with a comet rather than an incoming invasion fleet, galactic survey probe or the long-awaited cosmic repossession agency.
That mundane classification does not make it mundane.
3I/ATLAS formed in another planetary system before being expelled into interstellar space, where NASA says it may have wandered for millions or billions of years before crossing humanity’s neighborhood. Every measurement therefore samples material assembled around another star: a naturally delivered piece of comparative planetary science requiring no spacecraft to survive the trip there.
Follow-up Hubble analysis published later in January detected the comet’s nucleus and measured an opposition surge in its brightness. Researchers estimated an effective nucleus radius of about 1.3 kilometers under a typical cometary reflectivity assumption and found its outbound behavior broadly consistent with ordinary solar-system comets. That makes 3I/ATLAS scientifically extraordinary for perhaps the most charming possible reason: something from unimaginably far away came all this distance only to behave, in several respects, like the rocks and ice already lying around locally.
The discovery is a useful corrective to two opposing human impulses. One is to look at every strange thing in the sky and immediately declare aliens. The other is to hear that scientists have found an actual object from another solar system and somehow decide that this is boring because it has not yet fired a laser.
No laser was required.
For a few months, humanity has something made beneath another sun moving through its own backyard.
That should be weird enough.
