Planet Remains Detectably Warmer Than It Used to Be Despite Internet’s Continued Disinfo Campaigns

EARTH — July 2026 concluded as one of the hottest Julys humanity has measured, continuing the irritating scientific trend in which decades of predicted global warming keep appearing in the temperature record despite a heroic counteroffensive from men posting pictures of snowballs.

Early in the month, the Reuters Climate Monitor showed the average daily high around the world running approximately 1 degree Celsius — 1.8°F — above the historical July 4 norm from 1961 through 1990. Africa was running approximately 2.3°C, or 4.2°F, above its historic average.

This does not mean every place was one degree warmer.

Climate statistics remain stubbornly unwilling to operate like a thermostat.

Some places were cooler than normal.

Others were much hotter.

The important bit is what happens when those measurements are aggregated over enormous areas and compared over time—the thing climatologists have been doing while Facebook's finest minds investigate whether it was cold at Uncle Jerry's house in 1987.

By month's end, the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service calculated that July 2026 was jointly the second-warmest July globally on record, essentially tied with July 2024 and trailing only July 2023.

The global average surface-air temperature for July was 16.90°C, about 0.67°C above the 1991–2020 July average and approximately 1.47°C above the estimated 1850–1900 preindustrial level.

Different datasets and historical baselines produce somewhat different rankings and anomaly numbers—which is normal rather than evidence that thermometers have joined the Deep State. NOAA's independent analysis likewise placed July 2026 among the very hottest Julys in the instrumental record.

The oceans were arguably more disturbing.

Copernicus reported that extra-polar sea-surface temperatures were the highest ever recorded for July, partly influenced by developing El Niño conditions in the equatorial Pacific. Western Europe experienced its warmest June–July period on record. Period.

Arctic sea-ice extent ranked sixth lowest for July, while Antarctic sea ice ranked fifth lowest. Much of Europe experienced drier-than-average conditions, exceptional wildfire activity and abnormally low river flows.

There is a useful difference here for everybody who became a climate scientist when Al Gore annoyed them in 2006.

Weather is not climate.

A cold winter does not disprove global warming.

A hot afternoon does not prove it.

A hurricane does not prove it.

A snowstorm does not disprove it.

The evidence comes from long-term changes across temperature records, oceans, glaciers, ice sheets, sea level, seasonal patterns and extreme-event probabilities. Patterns.

This is less emotionally satisfying than walking outside and announcing one's findings.

The Earth has unfortunately chosen statistics.

As George Carlin said, grounding the eco-extremist argument perfectly:

"The planet has been through a lot worse than us. Been through earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, continental drift, solar flares, sun spots, magnetic storms, the magnetic reversal of the poles, hundreds of thousands of years of bombardment by comets and asteroids and meteors... The planet isn’t going anywhere. We are! We’re going away."

And if it’s true that plastic is not degradable, well, the planet will simply incorporate plastic into a new paradigm: the earth plus plastic."

You know what they’re interested in? A clean place to live. Their own habitat... There’s nothing wrong with the planet. The planet is fine. The people are fucked!"

And human influence is also no longer the speculative portion of this story.

Scientists examining Europe's severe early-summer heat concluded that the event would have been virtually impossible without human-caused climate change.

That does not mean fossil-fuel emissions individually scheduled a particular Tuesday to be 104 degrees.

It means adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere changes the underlying probability distribution upon which ordinary weather occurs.

Think of loading dice.

Rolling sixes existed before.

There are just more sixes on the fucking dice now.

July supplied plenty of sixes.

A broad heat dome placed tens of millions of Americans under heat warnings around Independence Day. Europe's early heatwave contributed to substantial excess mortality in France and Spain.

Later in the month, prolonged heat and drought helped feed major wildfires across France, Spain, North Africa and Canada. Reuters reported hundreds of thousands of evacuations in France and Spain while Canada was dealing with nearly 900 active wildfires and millions of hectares already burned.

Major European waterways also ran exceptionally low. The Danube in parts of Romania fell to levels not seen since 1996, affecting irrigation, shipping and tourism, while shallow sections of the Rhine constrained cargo traffic.

Climate change does not need to kill someone directly with a large red thermometer to matter.

Heat dries soil.

Dry soil cools the air less effectively.

Vegetation becomes easier to burn.

Wildfires become harder to contain.

River levels fall.

Power plants struggle for cooling water.

Agriculture suffers.

Shipping becomes more expensive.

Insurance notices.

Then everybody who declared climate policy an abstract concern gets to meet it in the grocery bill.

There is another complication in 2026: El Niño.

The developing Pacific warming pattern naturally pushes global temperatures upward and alters rainfall patterns around the world. Reuters reported that the World Meteorological Organization expected El Niño conditions to persist at least into November.

This sometimes becomes rhetorical ammunition for people attempting to prove human-caused warming does not exist.

It proves approximately the opposite of what they think it proves.

El Niño is a natural cycle.

Climate change is a long-term human-driven warming trend.

Both can occur simultaneously.

A person may also have the heat turned up while somebody lights the oven.

Finding the oven does not prove the furnace is imaginary.

Likewise, individual variability remains real. Eastern Europe and Scandinavia experienced significant areas of below-average July temperatures even as Western Europe baked.

Climate realism should mean accepting all of that rather than selectively believing whichever portion best annoys one's political enemies.

The climate is warming.

Humans are the dominant cause of the modern long-term warming trend.

Natural variability still exists.

Winter still exists.

Snow still exists.

Cold records can still occur.

No competent climate scientist has claimed Virginia will transform into Venus next Thursday.

This really should not be intellectually difficult.

Yet climate change became absorbed into the culture war, where acknowledging atmospheric chemistry apparently obligates someone to personally apologize for plastic straws while denying it requires standing beside an oil company and pretending carbon dioxide recently acquired partisan membership.

The atmosphere does not care.

CO₂ lacks a voter-registration card.

Methane has no pronouns.

The ocean has never watched cable news.

Physics remains politically unaffiliated and deeply fucking inconsiderate.

The practical argument is therefore no longer whether warming exists.

It is what societies do about a problem already underway.

Mitigation matters because additional greenhouse emissions produce additional warming.

Adaptation matters because some warming and its consequences are already here.

Cities need cooling infrastructure.

Utilities need grids capable of surviving greater heat.

Communities need wildfire planning.

Agriculture has to adjust.

Water systems have to adjust.

Buildings have to adjust.

Insurance markets are already adjusting, generally using their preferred public-policy instrument:

charging your ass more money.

And this is where Cornelius's climate realism becomes distinctly unromantic.

Nobody needs to worship nature.

Nobody needs to become a vegan hermit.

Nobody needs to pretend every environmental program is intelligent or every corporation selling a green product has suddenly found Jesus.

Human beings altered the atmosphere because fossil fuels proved extraordinarily useful for building industrial civilization.

Now industrial civilization has to become clever enough to deal with the side effects of its own success.

That is not guilt.

That is maintenance.

If somebody's basement keeps flooding because the drainage system was designed for a climate that no longer exists, a philosophical debate over whether rainfall has become woke is of limited assistance.

July 2026 did not prove climate change.

It did something much more boring.

It became another data point in the enormous mountain of evidence that already has.
